Custom milled treads with built-in cubbies
The original stairs had a strange configuration because of a shortened overall length for the stairwell. The 90 degree turn required 4 treads instead of the usual 3 in order to get low enough to clear the ceiling overhead. It was very awkward — the treads were very narrow on the inside turn and the risers were not a consistent height — making it a difficult staircase to navigate. The clients also wanted something done with the dead space on one side of the stairs where they were under a beam so that it was not walkable. I was able to widen out the winders by pushing the bottom step forward and was also able to make the heights consistent all the way up by custom making the treads so that some were 1½" thick and others were thinner — with a 1½" bullnose wrapping over the riser. I then installed cubbies that followed the steps down.
